Mental Health in South Africa
Mental illness is the third leading cause of disability in South Africa.
‘It is also one of the least talked about, accepted or understood concepts. The issue of mental illness is surrounded by stigma, fear, irrational beliefs and misinformation. Despite the overwhelming burden of mental illness, the proposed new South African curriculum for professional nurse education excludes psychiatric nursing. Graduates will be registered as general nurses and midwives. Nurses will no longer be able to state that they care for the whole person.’
This ‘HIV Nursing Matters’ issue examine mental illness from different viewpoints.
