Transforming Lives, Enhancing Communities – Innovations in Global Mental Health
A new commentary published in the New England Journal of Medicine
that summarises the World Innovation Summit for Health (WISH) mental health report,
The commentary outlines the contemporary Global Mental Health situation- the current burden of mental disorders, the personal and societal impact of this burden, the severe human rights violations people with mental disorders experience and the fact that despite the robust evidence testifying to the effectiveness of a range of pharmacologic, psychological, and social interventions, the majority of the world’s population has no access to these interventions. Patel and Saxena also describe some of the recent promising innovations that have been taking place in the Global Mental Health arena.
Authors: Centre for Global Mental Health (CGMH) co-director Vikram Patel and WHO Shekhar Saxena
Co-author: CGMH Deputy Director Mary De Silva
“Our ultimate goal must be universal mental health care.. The time to act is now”.
